The term "Re-coring a radiator" refers to replacing the center portion of a radiator. Re-coring uses the original tanks and brackets from the failed unit and installs them onto a brand new "American Made" core. Doing this allows us to upgrade the core for one better suited for the hot humid climate its being operated in instead of the multipurpose core the dealer has installed. Making a superior, more cost effective and efficient radiator. Re-coring is advisable when a radiator has too many leaks for a simple repair and it also guarantees that unit will last much longer.
The core of a radiator is the center portion that is made up of tubes that the coolant passes through, the fin material then draws the heat away from the tubes so the fan can expel the heat, this reduces the temperature of the coolant before it returns to the engine. When the tubes and fins have been externally damaged, corroded, or blocked by rust or other debris a replacement core is the next step in restoring the radiator to its optimal performance. Rust or corrosion in the cooling system can create blockages preventing the coolant from flowing. Other external elements such as road salt, dirt, and chemicals can damage a radiator core.
Industrial equipment, trucks, and buses have tanks that are bolted to the headers of the core. Tanks and side panels are unbolted and removed during the re-coring process. Dirt, rust and sludge are cleaned from inside the radiator tanks. The old gasket material that once sealed the tanks to the core are removed. Tanks receive new custom made gaskets and are then bolted onto the new core. The radiator is then pressure tested for at least one hour to insure a proper seal and that there are no leaks. This same process is done with inner coolers, turbo coolers, and hydraulic coolers.
